Liu Fang

van het Canada Council for the Arts vertrok zij in 1996 naar Montreal, waar ze zich vestigde. Fang geldt als een van de meest virtuoze speelsters van de pipa of Chinese luit. Daarnaast bespeelt ze ook de guzheng of Chinese citer. Fang vertolkt zowel het traditionele Chinese repertoire als hedendaags gecomponeerde muziek. Ze creëerde werken van de Canadese componisten R. Murray Schafer en Melissa Hui en speelde samen met het Nouvelle Ensemble Moderne, Alcan String Quartet, Quartetto Paul Klee Venezia en met violist Malcolm Goldstein. Ze was soliste in twee concerti voor pipa en orkest ('Ghost Opera' van Tan Dun en 'King Chu Doffs his Armour' van Zhou Long) met het Moravisch Symfonisch Orkest in Praag. In 2001 kreeg Fang de Future Generations Millennium Prize van de Canada Council for the Arts toegekend. In 2006 ontving ze de Charles Cros Prijs van de Académie Française voor haar cd 'Le son de soie', verschenen bij Accords Croises.

Liu Fang (Chinese: t 劉芳, s 刘芳, p Liú Fāng; b. 1974) is a Chinese–Canadian musician who is one of the most prominent pipa players in the world. Described in the media as the "empress of pipa" (L'actualité), "divine mediator" (World), "the greatest ambassadress of the art of the pipa", Liu Fang is known as "possessing virtuoso technique, grace and a unique empathy toward the music she plays – whether it is a traditional and folk tune or a modern Western composition" (All Music Guide).
