Thomas Hirschhorn

Thomas Hirschhorn (b. 1957 / Switzerland. Lives in Paris), artist.
He studied graphic design at the Schule für Gestaltung in Zürich before setting up as an artist. In 2001 he was the first artist to receive the Marcel Duchamp Prize. His recent one-man exhibitions include: 'Caveman' at the Barbara Galdstone Gallery in New York (2002); 'Wirtschaftslandschaft Davos', Kunsthaus Zürich (2001); 'Pole-Self', Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2001); 'World Airport', The Renaissance Society, Chicago (2000); 'Bernsteinzimmer', Galerie Arndt & Partner, Berlin (1999). Recent group exhibitions: Documenta 11, Kassel (2002); 'Mirror's Edge', Tramway, Glasgow (2001); 'Orbis Terrarum', Royal Museum of Fine Art, Antwerp (2000).

Thomas Hirschhorn (born 16 May 1957) is a Swiss artist who lives and works in Paris. Trained in Zurich and inspired by Joseph Beuys and Andy Warhol, he began as a graphic designer and switched to art in the 1990s. He has become known for using everyday materials in the creation of complex sculptures executed often on a large scale. In addition, he has written extensively on his work and the theories that inform it.
