ACROSS - Ouest
Ouest
Because their thinking about architecture was very similar, Jan Haeren joined the firm Ouest Architecture that was founded by Stéphane Damsin in 2009. Their field of work is the dense urban fabric of Brussels, which is also the city in which they are based. There they take full advantage of the differences between the two of them, both in terms of language and of architecture; and of their different professional backgrounds.
During the design process, the architects often make use of references. They test out their designs using models. These serve as the basis for an ongoing discussion and are a handy way of taking a project further and of presenting it. Damsin and Haeren always propose a variety of scenarios to the client and ensure that all construction partners understand the project in detail.
They like to describe themselves as lovers of architecture rather than as experts. For Damsin and Haeren, curiosity is key to the continued diversification of their approach and order portfolio. That’s why they are currently working in both an urban, suburban and rural environment; in both the public and the private sector; and on both the realisation of homes, and an educational farm and cultural institutions.
They recently won the competition for the renovation of Le Rideau theatre in Brussels, as well as for the renovation of the Théâtre Jean Vilar in Louvain-la-Neuve.
The young wolves of the Brussels-based bureau Ouest were introduced by the architect Alexander Dierendonck (dierendonckblancke architects).

The ACROSS lecture series is already at its fourth edition. Its starting point is the observation that in Belgium there is a lack of exchange and dialogue between the French-speaking and Dutch-speaking architectural cultures. The lectures are designed to address this and to offer a forum where young architectural firms can reflect on their practice and on the context in which they work. Every speaker is introduced by a senior architect from the other language region.
