BULK explores how a stronger focus on structure can contribute to a resilient city
Warehouses, offices, stacked buildings, factories… What can we learn from these buildings which at first sight appear to have simple constructions? What makes them (re)useable and special at the same time? BULK architecten explores how a stronger focus on structure and construction can contribute to a resilient, robust city. If we are still making new buildings, then we should at least be ensuring that they have a long lifespan. BULK architecten believes that buildings with an excess of construction and space are the best suited to coping with changes of use and technics. But realising robust, open buildings involves confronting numerous barriers. An unequal collaboration between architect and engineer means that the construction seldom serves as the foundation for a design. How can architects, engineers, clients, developers, contractors and governments contribute to the creation of long-term value? In ‘Construct’, BULK goes in search of handles for a changing practice.
