BWMSTR Label / Wonen in diversiteit
tentoonstelling
In 'Living in Diversity. Inclusive forms of housing for newcomers', the HEIM Collective looks for a feasible alternative for housing refugees. The main focus is on innovative forms of housing where newcomers and committed citizens share spaces and thereby encourage cooperation and integration.
At present, during their asylum procedure, refugees find themselves in open collective centres that are often isolated from the rest of society. These centres provide for their basic needs, but discourage self-organisation, entrepreneurship and integration.
Their recognition as refugees is often followed by a laborious search for a suitable home. As a result, the world in which the newcomers live is often the small island of a segregated reception area. HEIM is one of the initiators of two housing projects that put a new approach into practice. In addition, the collective cooperates with organisations in civil society to develop a structural approach to the need for housing recognised refugees.
In 2017-18, the Flanders Architecture Institute is showing the results of a selection of BWMSTR Labels (Government Architect Labels) in the corridors of deSingel. The HEIM Collective obtained a BWMSTR Label in 2016 for its research into inclusive forms of housing for newcomers. These Labels are an important instrument by which the Flemish Government Architect can spotlight innovative ideas that are relevant to current policy, and thereby support research (by design).
