In heavily built-up Flanders, we are insufficiently aware of the space that we do have at our disposal. RE-ST seeks out this underused ‘Stray space’ and maps it. It is only by activating this space or giving it back to nature that we can call a halt to the growing ‘stray space’.
Stray space manifests itself at a variety of scales. RE-ST studies four areas: culture, education, road infrastructure, housing and heritage. For the first theme, deSingel serves as a case study. Since the campus was inaugurated in 1968, the site was extended several times. The latest extension, by Stéphane Beel Architects, provided some 12,000 m² of extra space. Based on figures and stories, RE-ST maps to what extent the campus currently may or may not be underused.
