Tamed Nature explores the layered history of green space in Antwerp.
Tamed Nature explores the layered history of urban greenery in Antwerp. From the first city parks in the 19th century to contemporary climate activism, the city reflects global shifts in power, space and ecology. The exhibition tells the city's untold stories. Contemporary artists and architects question common ideas about urban nature, with a view to an inclusive and resilient future.
Public green spaces are crucial to urban living environments. They promote quality of life and health, strengthen cities against climate change and create social connections. Yet they are not neutral: they evolve alongside political, economic and social agendas. Green spaces in cities give rise to tensions - between gentrification and accessibility, privatisation and commons, biodiversity and recreation, safety and exclusion, environmental justice and exploitation.
