Microcosm
Public life in the metropolis is played out in the theatres, churches, auditoria, hospitals, banks, schools and so on. They form a city within the city, a microcosm. Most of these buildings originated in the 18th and 19th centuries, when turbulent urban development fundamentally changed the appearance of cities.
In 'Microcosm', historical and contemporary illustrations outline the wealth of spatial experiences in the city. These pictures zoom in on what is going on inside the buildings. From Rudoplh Ackermann's 'Microcosm of London' to Candida Höfer's tranquil photos of museums, libraries and other prominent buildings.
