Tafelzetting #2 Joris Kerremans
tentoonstelling
The Ghent-based architect Joris Kerremans presents his work in the exhibition series Table Setting. In this series, young architects from Flanders and Brussels take up their positions on the square in front of DE SINGEL, with the help of a set of display tables and attributes designed by the Brussels-based architect Laura Muyldermans.
Joris Kerremans designs from a markedly open mindset. His multiform practice attests to a ‘wilful naivety and astonishment’, with different aspects in the process serving as the subject of his fascination. Not only are his buildings and objects created with a healthy dose of intuition and coincidence, but they also assume an open attitude towards the user or observer.
Table Setting
Table Setting is the new exhibition series for young architects in Flanders and Brussels from the Flanders Architecture Institute and DE SINGEL. It is the next step within a tradition of young architecture at DE SINGEL. Established names have found a platform on which to showcase their early oeuvre here since the 1980s (Young Architecture in Belgium in 1988 and 35m³ young architecture in 2005). Today too, young architects are challenged to determine their own position vis-à-vis the discipline, complex spatial situations and social issues.
The square in front of DE SINGEL represents the cacophony in which young architects start their own practice. The multiform boundaries of the asphalt surface serve as the perfect backdrop to this exhibition series. Every architect who is exhibiting there has their own set of tables with attributes, designed by Laura Muyldermans. Not only are the tables an installation in which the designers can showcase their work, they also challenge them to take up a spatial position on the square.
