BWMSTR Label - The act of building
vernissage
In the exhibition ‘The act of building’, BC architects & studies redefines the construction process, with a more intense collaboration between the architect and the contractor as a central starting point. It does this on the basis of the Bioklas (Organic Class) project that it is developing for the municipality of Edegem, which utilises earth as its primary building material. The brickwork vaults are constructed using blocks of earth dug from a local quarry. Lime and hemp act as an insulating coating around the building. Thanks to the organisation of on-site workshops, 70% of the building materials are produced on site. The architect and the contractor are thus creating an interesting learning environment for young architects, students and builders, as well as for parents and their children. With the Bioklas project, BC architects & Studies is presenting a viable alternative to the traditional construction process.
About the BWMSTR Label series of exhibitions
The Flemish Government Architect’s aim in creating the BWMSTR Label was to take up innovative and policy relevant ideas, and thus to support (design-based) research in the early stages. In 2016/17, the Flemish Architecture Institute is exhibiting the results of a selection of the BWMSTR Labels in the corridors of deSingel.
