The performing arts as we know them today are the result of a heterogeneous creative process. To gain an insight into the many varieties of theatre, performance and dance to be seen today, we go in search of their origins. They are to be found in the model of theatre that prevailed throughout Europe in the nineteenth century: realistic, text-based theatre.
