6h 30' For many years Sergei Prokofiev was regarded as an enigma in twentieth-century music history. The greatest mystery, however, was his return to the Soviet Union in the thirties, at the height of Stalin's reign of terror. He has often been criticised for this about-turn. However, recent study has shed new light on Prokofiev's character and development. His music appears to have been inspired by a consistent spiritual doctrine. His conversion to the doctrine of Christian Science greatly stimulated his creative work and explains the extraordinary way in which he was able to translate the conditions of Soviet musical life into a personal, spiritual story. This story is worth telling, especially because of the masterpieces it generated, such as the ballet music 'Romeo and Juliet' and the opera 'War and Peace'.
