Henry Purcell

The work of the English composer Purcell (1659-1695) is among the most important in the baroque repertoire. His oeuvre consists largely of church and ceremonial music (Ode for St. Cecilia's Day, Funeral music for Queen Mary, and so on). He also applied himself to songs and even to opera (Dido and Aeneas). By blending the old Elizabethan choral tradition with French and above all Italian stylistic elements, he was able to lead English music to new heights. An achievement that resulted in his being given the title 'Orpheus Britannicus'. We are pleased to introduce you to this composer's exceptionally captivating oeuvre.
