Léon Stynen (1899-1990) studied architecture at the Antwerp Academy. His famous designs include the Belgian pavilion for the World Exhibition in New York – in collaboration with Henry van de Velde and Victor Bourgeois -, the BP building in Antwerp, the casinos of Oostende and Knokke, and of course deSingel. As well as having realised an important architectural oeuvre, Stynen played a significant role in the development of architectural education and the architectural culture in Belgium. In 1948 he became director of the Antwerp Academy’s Architecture Department. And in 1950 he became director of the Nationaal Hoger Instituut voor Architectuur en Decoratieve Kunsten Ter Kameren.
In 1963, the newly founded Architects’ Association chose him as their first national president.
The exhibition 'Léon Stynen, architect' displays pieces from Stynen’s rich archive with iconic designs, from first sketch to completion. The archive material is brought to life with contemporary and recent architectural photography, models, pieces from private collections and testimonies from former colleagues, employees and clients
