Masterclass Juan Herreros
Implicit performance, exploring the hybrid condition
This master-class rounds off the 'International Concrete Design Competition', a biennial international competition for students of architecture and related disciplines. Each master-class focuses on a building of historical and architectural importance. The two previous master-classes were held at the Berlage Instituut (architect J.J.P. Oud) in Rotterdam and at the Bauhaus in Dessau (architect W. Gropius). During their ten days in Antwerp, at least forty prizewinners from nine countries will carry out an assignment which they will present to the public on Saturday 9 August. The Madrid architect Juan Herreros, whose firm Abalos & Herreros had a solo exhibition at deSingel four years ago, is the curator and mentor.
Juan Herreros (1958, Madrid) set up the Abalos & Herreros firm in Madrid in 1984 together with Iñaki Abalos (1956, San Sebastian). From 1984 to 1988 he was senior lecturer at the architectural school in Madrid. Herreros has been a visiting lecturer at Columbia University in New York (1995), the Architectural Association in London (1998) and the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule in Lausanne (1998). Since 2004 he has been a lecturer at the Princeton University School of Architecture.
