Cindy Blackman is probably best known for providing the drumming heartbeat that grooves along behind the rock star Lenny Kravitz. She is of course also very well known as a power drummer and percussionist in the hard-bop mould. Blackman decided she was going to be a drummer when she was eighteen. Her love of jazz led her to New York, where she befriended most of her drummer heroes, including Art Blakey, Elvin Jones and Tony Williams. Since then she has played for millions of people, both in her own band and as a sidekick to Jackie McLean, Joe Henderson, George Benson, Pharaoh Sanders and others, and also as Lenny Kravitz' drummer.
