2h Alex Baczyński-Jenkins reflects on freedom and history.
‘No. Even now, I can hardly believe that this all really happened,’ Christopher Isherwood wrote about Berlin in the 1930s. A libertine city of sexual freedom and a thriving nightlife scene. Until history took a turn.
In Malign Junction (Goodbye, Berlin), Polish-British choreographer Alex Baczyński-Jenkins revisits the era Isherwood described in the novel Goodbye Berlin. Baczyński-Jenkins previously appeared at DE SINGEL with Untitled (Holding Horizon) and Unending love, or love dies, on repeat like it’s endless.
Helicopter sounds and an indistinct hum simulate a restless unease. Is there cause for nervousness? Have we once again arrived at a decisive crossroads? A repetitive, hypnotic soundscape suggests that we are running in circles through history. With Malign Junction (Goodbye, Berlin), Baczyński-Jenkins crafts a poignant choreography that oscillates between stasis, loss, and the fractured promise of progress. As if reminding us that freedoms are never permanently secured.
