A bold take on nudity and the digital body in art and media
Is this a TikTok-video of an OnlyFans performance, an art-historical stereotype, or pornography? EXPOSURE by the Swiss-Greek performance artist and choreographer Alexandra Bachzetsis features all possible forms of nudity that we recognise from film, advertising, art and digital culture.
With her performances, Bachzetsis has spent her whole career reflecting the representation of the female body in popular culture. In her first large-scale performance, a nine-person ensemble dances naked through reality and fantasy. The stage resembles a photo studio, the dancers wear nothing or almost nothing, apart from body paint, patent leather platform boots and pink fabric. In an intense and imaginative choreography, they mimic facial expressions and poses copied directly from the incessant flow of images that surrounds us. The perspective continuously shifts between large projected close-ups and collective night club scenes. The result is a cheerful, critical and empathic performance that allows us to let go of all those pre-digested images and free the (naked) body.
