Ali Chahrour
The love behind my eyes
There is much more than love to be found, in this quiet work of astonishing power and beauty. The Arts Review
Ali Chahrour is a guest at DE SINGEL for the first time. Following a triptych about burial rituals that was presented at the prestigious Festival d’Avignon, The Love Behind My Eyes is the final part of a trilogy about love. His intense, moving choreography is anchored in stories, legends and lyrical poetry from the Arabic heritage. In it, Chahrour goes in search of the meaning of love and the different ways in which we express passion and intimacy, from the past to the present.
On stage, two male dancers create beautiful tableaux vivants, accompanied live by a singer who performs Arabic lyrical poetry. What is expressed is love in all its complexity, and the emotions of lovers. The dancers embody sensuality and passionate surrender, but equally display vulnerability and a silent protest against forbidden love stories. A gem.
