1h 30' Choreographers Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker and Jérôme Bel have given 'Der Abschied' a central role in this piece, which they made together. This long, mysterious and moving song about the acceptance of death is the last movement in Gustav Mahler's symphonic song cycle 'Das Lied von der Erde'. The music is performed live, not the original for a large romantic orchestra, but Arnold Schoenberg's transcription for thirteen musicians. The farewell. How do you translate this masterpiece choreographically and theatrically? In a highly discursive performance the makers present a triple interpretation and so are able to constantly approach this complex score from a new angle. How do you dance wisdom and stillness when you are confronted with the inevitable? De Keersmaeker accepts the challenge like no other. She goes solo but is not alone. She is supported by Jérôme Bel, mezzo-soprano Sara Fulgoni and the Ictus Ensemble conducted by Georges-Elie Octors.
