In a new solo, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker looks back at her extensive oeuvre
Forty years on from her iconic debut Fase, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker looks back at her extensive oeuvre in a new solo. Bach, her great musical passion, is naturally a part of this. Following on from the Cello Suites and Brandenberg Concertos, this time the Goldberg Variations, a late work by the German baroque composer, take centre stage. Together with young pianist Pavel Kolesnikov, De Keersmaeker engages in a dialogue with the embodied abstraction and cosmic grandeur of Bach’s music. For this composition, Bach began with a simple, subdued melody and an underlying bass line that branches off into thirty variations. Associative, nimble and with multiple allusions to earlier pieces, De Keersmaeker activates the memory of her dancing body that has now been on stage for almost half a century. She thereby remains faithful to the principle of the musical score as a blueprint for the choreography.
