More than anyone else, the top choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker is committed to structure and emotion. This is why she sees music as an essential partner. Each score is a structure she explores all the way down to its very foundations. In each line of dance she looks for the counterparts of musical concepts like melody, dissonance, harmony and counterpoint. The axis is Claude Debussy. In his impressionist music the choreographer looks for transparency and mobility. Igor Stravinsky also had a great respect for his friend Debussy. Indeed, his 'Symphonies d'instruments à vent' (1920), one of the musical works in the dance performance, is a tribute to him. A century ago, Nijinsky was already combining the music of Debussy and Stravinsky for Les Ballets Russes. The dancers use this historical fact in the rehearsal process. De Keersmaeker places the past and the present side by side. She also asked the modern composer George Benjamin to write an orchestral work. One of the last pupils of Olivier Messiaen, he is an important bearer of Debussy's legacy. And this completes the musical circle. 'D'un soir un jour' is an elegant choreographic work that incorporates musical affinities.
