1h In 1998 Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker created 'Drumming', a choreographic work for thirteen dancers, to 1971 music with the same title by Steve Reich. Even before her debut work 'Fase: Four movements to the music of Steve Reich' the choreographer was attracted to the structure and frenetic rhythm of Reich's music. This American composer of repetitive, minimalist music discovered the key ideas for 'Drumming' in Ghana, where he studied West African drum techniques. He wrote the score on the basis of rhythmic processes that are initially simple, but become increasingly complex through accumulation and multiplication. Like the music, the dance starts out from a single phrase of movement that is constantly repeated and explored, then reversed, accelerated, delayed or altered in endless combinations, variations and transformations.
A revival, this time with live music performed by the Ictus ensemble conducted by Georges-Elie Octors.
