In a single programme, the renowned Ballet de l'Opéra de Lyon combines two ‘monstres sacrés’ from American postmodern dance: Merce Cunningham and Lucinda Childs.
Cunningham created ‘Winterbranch’ (1964), set to the minimalistic ‘2 Sounds’ by composer La Monte Young. In a scenography by Robert Rauschenberg, a forerunner of Pop Art, six figures in sweat suits and sneakers move around in the half-darkness, illuminated by flashing head torches.
DeSingel has previously staged ‘Dance’ by Lucinda Childs (1979) in 1991. In the piece, music by Phillip Glass accompanies a white ballet in which repetition and constantly changing patterns create a hypnotic haze. The movements are highly precise, yet are feather-light and performed with grace.
This is an unmissable celebration of minimalism!
