A ritual of dance and music in response to an uncertain world.
In a world marked by conflict and uncertainty, Chapters of Celebration poses a pressing question: what is there left to celebrate? When joy seems inappropriate, people have, for centuries, nevertheless turned to ritual and dance - not as escape, but as resistance.
Following its creation at DE SINGEL last season, this acclaimed production returns in a new configuration. In the Red Hall, the audience sits on the stage itself, right beside the ritual.
Director Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe and composer Wouter Deltour rediscover one another in their shared love of music and ritual. From Folies d’Espagne - a musical theme that resounds down the centuries in the work of Bach, Vivaldi, and others - a swirling whole emerges. Michele Rizzo, Cherish Menzo, Lasseindra Ninja, Iker Karrera, Jeremy Nedd, and Toni Jodar provide the choreography.
Seven singing dancers move through ‘chapters’ in which baroque, ballroom, jazz, and rave converge. As archaeologists of celebration, they dig for a collective energy that we are in danger of losing. An invitation to keep on dancing
