Masilo's Hamlet is a moving South African dance remake filled with universal themes.
South African dancer and choreographer Dada Masilo makes adaptations of classical stories in which she combines her background in contemporary dance and ballet with lesser known African dance forms. In her latest creation, she transforms Shakespeare's most word-rich play into a contemporary and universally recognisable performance with dance, music and text. Masilo’s HAMLET is set in urban South Africa. She scraps much of the text, allowing themes such as deception, lies and betrayal to emerge.
The choreographer invariably employs androgyny and gender fluidity in her work. In Shakespeare's time, women's roles were played by men and boys, but here some women will also play male roles. Masilo’s idiosyncratic HAMLET exposes the play’s dark humour, while acoustic music serves as a nod to Shakespeare's era.
