Dada Masilo trained at P.A.R.T.S., the internationally renowned dance and performance school from Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. With this baggage, the exuberant South African dancer returned to her homeland, where she quickly started making her own work. She is fascinated by the study of unusual and lesser-known dance forms that are rooted in African culture. By fusing this vocabulary with contemporary dance and classical ballet, she developed her own dance language. During her studies, she had the opportunity to dance a fragment from Pina Bausch’s Sacre du Printemps. She was immediately captivated by the complex rhythm of Stravinsky's music. With The Sacrifice, in the company of ten dancers she takes Botswana’s ritual Tswana dance as her starting point. For this she already went to train in 2016 with Isaac Ramagole, a traditional dancer and healer. The Tswana dance is rhythmic and expressive, and both narrative and healing. The new musical score was composed especially for the performance by the South African composer Philip Miller and will be performed live by percussionist Tlale Makhene, vocalist Ann Masina, violinist Leroy Mogalatjane Mapholo and keyboard player Nathi Bongumusa Shongwe. With this performance, Dada Masilo wants to explore what rituals involve, what sacrifice meant for the Tswana people, and what it can mean for us today. After The Sacrifice was twice cancelled due to coronavirus, you will now finally get the opportunity to discover this unusual performance.
