Inspired by Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps, the South African choreographer Dada Masilo explores the meaning of rituals. Her starting point for this is the Tswana dance, a ritual dance from Botswana. Together with 14 dancers, she seeks to unite the ecstatic rhythm of Stravinsky's music and the complex expressiveness of the Tswana dance in a performance. At Masilo’s request, jazz pianist Paul Hanmer has written a new musical score. Her fascination for dance forms from African culture and her knowledge of contemporary dance and classical ballet make Masilo one of today’s most striking choreographers. Having completed her studies at P.A.R.T.S., Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’ school, she returned to South Africa. Today she makes her work at this exciting crossroads and brings together a variety of influences.
