A hallucinatory, sensual exploration of the essence of humanity.
The French-Belgian choreographer Damien Jalet conceived the choreography for the Oscar-nominated musical Emilia Pérez last year and served as a creative advisor for Madonna’s The Celebration Tour. His choreographies are celebrated from Japan to Mexico, from Paris to Antwerp. And this season, he returns to DE SINGEL for the second time, presenting his fourth collaboration with the Japanese scenographer Kohei Nawa. The music for Mirage was composed by Thomas Bangalter, co-founder of the French electro duo Daft Punk, a name that appeals to a wide audience even outside the dance world.
In Mirage, they use mirages and optical illusions to envision a humanity winding through a metaphorical desert, searching for itself. The eighteen performers of the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève undergo a series of unpredictable transformations, inspired by mythology, climatology, and botany. The result is a hallucinatory, sensual, meditative, and simultaneously visceral quest for the essence of humanity, beyond the veil of appearance. Those who have yet to become fans of Jalet's phenomenal work now have the chance to do so.
