Viva Brazil! The young ballet company São Paulo Companhia de Dança perform at deSingel for the first time. The Canadian choreographer Edouard Lock was commissioned by the company’s artistic director Inês Bogéa to create ‘The Seasons’, a stunning work for twelve dancers set to original music by Gavin Bryars. Lock seems to have patented superfast, whirling dance and standout technical features. ‘Gnawa’ is an ensemble piece for fourteen dancers by Nacho Duato. This Spanish choreographer, who trained at Béjart’s Mudra school, started out as a dancer with the Cullberg Ballet, and for ten years was part of Nederlands Dans Theater. ‘Gnawa’ is a compelling dance piece with strong, Arabian-inspired musical overtones: the gnawas, a Moroccan mystic brotherhood connected to the Sufis, are known for their rhythmic and spiritual songs.
