50' Dancer and choreographer Eko Supriyanto learnt traditional Javanese dance from his grandfather. Later he combined this tradition with Balinese and Western dance. In the meantime, he has won both the hearts of dance audiences worldwide and a place on the stages of more and more festivals and art houses. After two group choreographies, the talented dancer is now performing a solo. His fascination for diving is his source of inspiration. For him, the underwater world is a one without gravity where a different perspective becomes possible. In ‘Salt’, he mixes the maritime rhythm that so strongly defines his homeland with the farming culture and the earth. Indeed, his traditional Javanese dance vocabulary is strongly connected to the earth. Land and water, tradition and contemporaneity are the complementary forces that will now also form the foundations for this new solo. ‘Salt’ will premiere at deSingel as part of the Europalia Indonesia programme.
