The French choreographer Emanuel Gat is a welcome guest at DE SINGEL. Originally he wanted to become a conductor. In the end he chose dance, but music continued to play a central role for him, both in his life and in his performances. The soundscapes that he uses in his performances draws on diverse sources, ranging from classical to jazz to experimental. Act II & III alludes to the famous pieces of music from Puccini’s Tosca, and specifically in the version by conductor Georges Prêtre and Maria Callas from 1965. It is not so much the theatrical characters that intrigue Gat, but rather the universal themes such as love, betrayal, jealousy, hope and death. His intimate and powerful choreography - as always performed by a staggering group of dancers - exposes the multifaceted musical layers from a contemporary perspective. A compelling and deliciously unorthodox interpretation of a 19th-century masterpiece.
