Fabián Barba
A Mary Wigman dance evening
Can a piece of choreography from eighty years ago still be convincing? With this impressive gem, the young Ecuadorean dance-maker Fabián Barba proves that the answer is yes. While studying at P.A.R.T.S. he became fascinated by the work of Mary Wigman, one of the pioneers of modern dance. In the early twentieth century, this German dance artist created choreographic works that were revolutionary. For 'A Mary Wigman Dance Evening', Fabián Barba has reconstructed solos from her oeuvre. He doesn't find it odd that a man should do this: 'I don't try to be a woman, but to reconstruct the movements as exactly as possible. Wigman's dances are powerful, and you could say they were unisex.'
