(Fragment from the music score Shadow) BY HER HANDS is a solo piano study performed by two bodies. The contemporary music piece Shadow (2013) Study for Solo Piano by Rebecca Saunders, explores acoustic resonance in the use of clusters, a piano technique that requires broad gestures on the pianist’s arms and hands. Through the detailed instructions given to the body, the music score invites them to carry this research further into an embodied exploration that results into a deeper physical understanding of the music. Marina Delicado and Helen D’Haenens question why and how to perform this, rather rebellious, contemporary music piece in an attempt to step out of a classical established frame.
