Light. Darkness. Light. Something appears. An image, movement, transformation. Darkness again. Light. Something new. Surprise. And darkness. And light.
After years of intense performances and training, the Greek dancer and choreographer Ioannis Mandafounis developed a personal methodology for movement. To truly move spectators, he believes that dancers must give something to their audience. In Join they give pure joy.
After visiting DE SINGEL last season for a unique double bill with dance icon William Forsythe, for this performance Mandafounis unites dancers at different stages of their lives and careers. By having an ensemble of professionals at the highest level dance with a group of dance students from the Conservatory with which DE SINGEL shares a home, Mandafounis proves that people can be united in their diversity. It is a flowing choreography filled with passion, connection and pleasure. The wild explosion at the end is improbably moving because the dancers lose themselves almost naively in the pounding bass. It is a pleasure to share in their infectious amusement.
