This season, the Lyon ballet company once again presents high-quality repertoire. Alongside two pieces from the great ballet innovator William Forsythe, they also present a creation by the Greek choreographer Ioannis Mandafounis, who once danced with the Forsythe Company himself. Quintett from 1993 is generally regarded as one of Forsythe’s absolute masterworks. With this lyrical waltz for five dancers, Forsythe wrote a final love letter to his terminally ill wife. Tragically she never made it to the première. Conversely, the 2002 work N.N.N.N. is something of a danced string quartet. Four men move rhythmically and dynamically as four parts of the same brain. You see the music and hear the dance. This also applies to Mandafounis' Bis. N.S. (as usual), inspired by Nina Simone's mythical concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1979. The choreographer always creates special worlds with a strong focus on improvisation and the personality of the dancers.
