2h Jan Martens has a passion for popular culture and contemporary themes. In 2016, with ‘The Common People, he raised pertinent questions about privacy and the role played in this by social media through blind dates on stage. Now, in ‘Passing the Bechdel Test’, together with 13 young people, he wants to take stock of gender diversity and gender equality in the world today. Martens encourages them to stand in one another’s shoes, as well as those of female writers and personalities past and present. Fragments of text from letters, diaries, lyrics, essays and TED talks form the framework to which the young people’s biographies are added. For the first time, the choreographer is fully embracing text. Will this be a manifesto for the future? We are curious to find out.
