Pantsula is one of the many subcultures that developed during the Apartheid regime in South Africa. It is more than simply a dynamic dance form known for its lightning-fast footwork; the pantsula is also about a dress code, a way of speaking, a musical style and a philosophy of life. In The Ecstatic the heritage of the pantsula is united with the tradition of the praise break, the Black American gospel music that is often accompanied by ecstatic dancing. What happens when these two aesthetics meet? Six performers throw their virtuoso bodies into the battle and rove between rhythm and prayer. Time almost seems to stand still as the energy builds up. For The Ecstatic, choreographer Jeremy Nedd collaborated with Impilo Mapantsula, an organisation that upholds the history of the pantsula. Stunning.
