In this performance, the Congolese choreographer Jolie Ngemi transports you on a journey to the place where her dance career began. Enter via the stage and immediately immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the streets of Kinshasa. With dance performances that celebrate the joie de vivre and solidarity of the African continent, Ngemi counters negative European stereotypes. Each year, she organises the Bosangani festival, in which she showcases the vibrant dance culture of her home town, and in 2024, she brought several of those Bosangani makers to DE SINGEL.
In Lingala, Mbok’ Elengi means ‘country full of joie de vivre’, but the term transcends all linguistic boundaries. In an ecstatic choreography, five dancers try to break through barriers, clichés, and taboos. The intense, youthful, and sometimes sensual movements demonstrate an unstoppable inner strength. A strength that conquers injustice. The elegant costumes, vibrant movements, and driving rhythms of Congolese Sebene music unite to create an infectious performance that will leaves you dancing back outside, reborn.
