Laurent Chétouane
Sacré sacre du printemps
Laurent Chétouane, who was born in 1973, originally studied as an engineer in his native France. Gripped by the language and theatre of Heiner Müller, he then decided to pursue theatrical studies. Determined to follow his new vocation, he learnt German using Müller's texts. Today, he lives and works in Berlin. The actor's body plays an extremely important role in his cerebral stage productions. Along the way, he also turned his attention to the dance medium. Today, Laurent Chétouane is regarded as an important new voice in modern dance.
In 'Sacré Sacre du Printemps' he takes on one of the most important works from the dance and musical history of the twentieth century. When the work premiered in Paris in 1913, it was considered to be an artistic scandal. Chétouane uses this piece as his starting point, in order to talk about 'the unknown'. Seven dancers move in the area of tension between Stravinsky's music and newly composed music by Leo Schmidthals. This is not the sacrifice of a young woman. It is the sacrifice of what is now seen as a classic masterpiece, as a ritual in which the 'other' is simply allowed to be different.
