There are few choreographers with such an idiosyncratic signature as Marlene Monteiro Freitas. In her work, hyperformalism goes hand in hand with an excessive visual language and impressive physical intensity. Her latest choreography MAL - Embriaguez Divina is no exception. Freitas descends into the abyss of evil, and that has many faces. On stage, a choir of performers are haunted by demonic visions, toxic testimonies, bacterial images and rotten facts. We watch them, and they watch us. No better place to bring to life the Dionysian ecstasy of evil than the theatre. Art is by definition ominous because it dares to admit the irrational and the trance, wrote the surrealist philosopher Georges Bataille. This is a promising motto for MAL - Embriaguez Divina. Following the success of the Bacchantes, Marlene Monteiro Freitas now returns to DE SINGEL with an overwhelming work full of mythological motifs and boundless energy.
