A transformative ritual from the Belgian-Congolese artist Roland Gunst
The Belgian-Congolese artist Roland Gunst_John K Cobra returns to DE SINGEL with a new creation. After Flandria, in which he explored the question of integration through the Flemish Lion, for SPIRIT CAPITAL he takes the Tropical Bungalow as his starting point. This house, installed by the white Belgian colonial in Congo, was divided up according to the zoning principle: the strict partitioning of the living space for black and white. The ‘boys’ who worked in these houses began to copy the style of the white rulers in around 1910. This resulted in the rich tradition of Sape: performative, identitarian practices by Congolese dandies that show similarities to the 19th-century European dandies like Baudelaire. For this performance, Roland Gunst collaborates with Les Mybalés, the dance duo behind the twin sisters Doris and Nathalie Bokongo Nkumu. A transformative ritual is created on stage in which the chains of history are thrown off.
