A Love Supreme
‘A Love Supreme’ was created in 2005 by Salva Sanchis and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. This was triggered by their shared fascination for the eponymous 1964 album by the American composer and tenor saxophonist John Coltrane. In ‘A Love Supreme’, Coltrane and his three permanent musicians construct a total improvisational freedom from a simple basic structure in which they constantly shift boundaries. This is literally translated into dance, which weaves together improvisation and composition to create a seamless whole. In 2017 Salva Sanchis and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker decided to rework ‘A Love Supreme’ into a quartet for four young, male dancers. Their energetic, youthful interpretation emphasises the vitality of Coltrane’s ode to divine love.
