1h 15' In Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's oeuvre, the duet plays a prominent role. He himself danced with Akram Khan in 'Zero Degrees', with María Pagés in 'Dunas' and with Shantala Shivalingappa in 'Play'. Under the title '4D', he is now grouping four of his duets, which were created for his dancers at different times and in different contexts. But this is not a mere juxtaposition of four duos; it is a dance performance in its own right, with its own dramaturgy and scenography.
'Matter' is part of the 2008 choreography 'Origine', and examines a number of clichés about East and West. In it, movement is related to objects, which in turn function as totems to ward off loneliness. The lyrical duet 'Pure' explores the concepts of purity and cleansing. It was originally danced on Ostend beach as part of the 2010 Dansand festival, and was later integrated into 'Tezuka'. 'Sin' is a duet from Babel (words) and explores the tension between Eros and Thanatos. Finally, 'Faun', which dates from 2009, was the highlight of an evening centred on Nijinski put together by several different choreographers. Members of the La Monnaie orchestra will be providing live accompaniment to this duet specially for deSingel, in the form of an ensemble version of Claude Debussy's masterpiece. In addition to these four duets, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui will be screening the filmed duet for the music video 'Valtari'. He made this together with director Christian Larson for the title track of the eponymous CD by Icelandic rock band Sigur Rós.
