Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui / Eastman

Vlaemsch (chez moi) is the first performance by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui to be scheduled at DE SINGEL since 2019. In his latest creation, the Belgian-Moroccan choreographer confronts the Flemish roots he inherited from his mother’s side. For this he collaborates with visual artist Hans Op de Beeck, musician Floris De Rycker and fashion designer Jan-Jan Van Essche. Together they build a bridge to the prosperous Flanders of the 15th century, when the region’s reputation was promulgated by its internationally renowned artists.

Due to the striking parallels between the artistry of then and now, and with the same sense of experiment as their predecessors, the four contemporary ‘Flemish Masters’ seek out a more pluralistic national identity. What does it mean as an artist to be a Fleming when art does not stop at borders? Cherkaoui and his team try to find out in this aesthetic and philosophical manifesto.
