Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui - Eastman & Yabin Dance Studio

Many dance performances come about as a result of encounters, some of which are coincidental, and some of which are planned. This kind of meeting always has 'un moment de grâce': the moment when the two parties inspire each other, start to feed off one another and then become aware of the added value possible collaboration might bring. Often, one of the partners will ask the other: will you create a choreography for me? Or: may I come and learn the ropes with you in order to master your techniques, which are different to those of my culture? Choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, who is always open to cross-border collaboration, has experience of these sorts of meetings. In deSingel's dance studio, he became impressed by the exceptional talent of the young Chinese dancer Yabin Wang. He decided to create a choreography for her and her company 'Yabin Dance Studio', with four Chinese dancers and three of Eastman's dancers. A dance inspired by nature. By branches, which never grow straight, but always in unpredictable directions. A dance translated into pure movement, with fewer theatrical elements. It is certain that this new creation, whose stage setting is to be designed by a Chinese artist, will be permeated with the light and the monsoon of the Far East. The world premiere will take place in Beijing, and the European premiere at deSingel.
