‘Icon’, deSingel’s new large-scale dance co-production, is Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's second collaboration with GöteborgsOperans Danskompani. This time, the choreographer adds six of his Eastman dancers to the twelve dancers from the Swedish contemporary ballet company. His starting point is a critical questioning of cultures and their icons. He looks at how we need idols, but equally how, after a time, we have the urge to vilify them and replace them with others. Love and destroy. The British artist and stage designer Antony Gormley is a ‘long-lost pal’ whose stage sets you have already been able to admire in ‘Sutra’, ‘Babel’ and ‘Noetic’. The young Antwerp-based designer Jan-Jan Van Essche will be offering a fresh perspective on the costumes.
