2h 5' GöteborgsOperans Danskompani is the largest contemporary dance company in the far north. This dynamic company, consisting of thirty-nine dancers and seventeen nationalities, operates from its base in Gothenburg, Sweden, under the leadership of Adolphe Binder. Exploring new forms and demolishing walls between art and audience, and between art and society, play a central role in its artistic policy.
‘Spirit’ unites new work by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and the Japanese choreographer Saburo Teshigawara. In ‘Noetic’, a choreographic work for nineteen dancers, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui examines our instinctive need for structure and our desire to let our hair down from time to time. With movements that are sometimes mechanical, sometimes flowing and classical, the dancers construct and deconstruct reality.
Saburo Teshigawara’s choreographies are minimalist, aesthetic and spiritual. In ‘Metamorphosis’, inspired by the work of Kafka, the constant cell renewal in the body plays a central role. However, this creation is also about control and allowing yourself to be controlled. The choreographer explains: "Even though we are standing still, our body is in constant motion. That movement is life. If it stops, we die. Life is like riding a bicycle: if you stop, you lose your balance and fall. Life is balance in motion."
