Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui . Sadler's Wells London
m¡longa
The New York Times described the work of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui as a 'silky mix of hybrid forms of movement combined with emotionally intense theatre'. In 'm¡longa', the aim of this internationally renowned choreographer is to reveal the emotional impact of the Argentine tango. 'There are so many things in tango that we do not know and I am convinced that the elements we do not understand are precisely those that attract us the most.' With a cast of Argentine dancers and musicians, he sets out to capture the atmosphere and the essence of a milonga: a dance in which tables are placed around a dance floor and the men then ask the women to dance. All the couples dance freely but with an eye to the other, in a spiral, as if they were being absorbed into a cosmic whole. Over the last two years Cherkaoui, who already expressed his fascination with tango in earlier choreographic works, has regularly visited Buenos Aires to learn it. What attracts him to this dance is the incredible intensity and joy of dancing together, but also the touching and the sexuality.
