Tânia Carvalho & François Chaignaud present a double bill at DE SINGEL.
Tânia Carvalho and François Chaignaud, both previously guests at DE SINGEL, present a double bill that will thoroughly challenge your perspective on the normative body. They collaborated with the dancers of Dançando com a Diferença, an inclusive company based in Madeira that brings together artists with and without a disability. In Doesdicon (an anagram for ‘escondido’, ‘hidden’) Tânia Carvalho makes these performers who all-too-often stay hidden visible again by taking them with her in her surreal and grotesque universe.
For Blasons, François Chaignaud drew inspiration from ‘blasons’. Here he is not alluding to coats of arms but to a type of objectifying poetic descriptions of the female body. Chaignaud wants to break open the power structures embedded in that by having the artists of Dançando com a Diferença perform autonomously, and not as objects for our gaze. Thus the question arises of who exactly the spectator is here…
